Sunday Mornings 9:30 AM
Churches are involved in many different kinds of activities, but the one thing they all have in common is a Sunday morning assembly. This assembly isn't about fulfilling some kind of checklist to make sure you're 'good enough' to get into heaven, but rather a weekly meeting of a family, coming together to encourage one another as we all do our best to follow the teachings of Christ and pursue the holiness of God. In Hebrews 10 we're told to continue to meet together for the purpose of encouraging one another as the time of Christ's return draws closer, and this is exactly the kind of environment we strive to create at the Northland Mission Church: a place of encouragement and joy. You'll hear no fire-and-brimstone sermons about how bad you are, or stern lectures on how you're not doing enough. What you will hear are relevant messages lifted straight from scripture, encouraging us and teaching us all to grow in a deeper relationship with Christ. This isn't to say that we always sugar-coat it: sometime the truth is tough, but you can always trust that it will be delivered with Christian love.
We know that it can sometimes be intimidating to visit an unfamiliar place with unfamiliar customs and practices, so we've broken down our worship service to give you an idea of what you expect when you join us. Most importantly, we want you to feel comfortable, so dress accordingly! If that means a suit and tie, that's fine. And if that means shorts and flip-flops, that's fine as well! We believe that the true mark of a Christian is not what is seen on the outside, but their heart within. You won't be expected to conform to a certain style of dress or pattern of behavior to be welcomed and accepted by us, and you won't find us singling you out as a visitor. We design our services so that they are accessible to people from all walks of life--whether they be established Christians or someone in a church for the first time in their life we do our best to make sure you feel comfortable and welcomed when you're with us. We look forward to meeting you!
SIGN-IN Every week we ask those in attendance to sign the attendance clipboards that we have in every row. We're not going to stalk you or show up for dinner, but we would like to send you a thank you gift for joining us. We take the privacy of your information very seriously and will not share it with third parties.
SINGING Our church loves to sing. Our goal is not to sound pretty or impress others with our abilities, but to worship together and encourage each other by using the power of music to draw us closer to God. In addition to our worship leader, we also have a team of people who use microphones to help in the leading by singing the various vocal parts--soprano, alto, tenor, and bass. We welcome you to join us by singing as well, or to simply listen! The beauty of our praise is not in the quality our our voices, but in the passion of our hearts as we lift God's name in song.
TEACHING We believe it is important to always be learning and growing in our spiritual development, and a key part of that is our weekly lesson. Every week, Spencer or one of the other men of the congregation will present a teaching from God's word that shows us how God's plan and leading is still relevant for our lives today. We do not venerate Spencer or any other individual who speaks to us, but view it all as God's wisdom, shared with us through His Holy Spirit.
RESPONSE At the end of the lesson, whoever is speaking will often provide directions on specific ways that you can respond to the message if you feel moved to do so. If this be the case, we offer you the opportunity to walk to the back of the auditorium where one of our spiritual counselors will be available to listen and help in a caring and confidential way. You may also choose to fill out a prayer request card and place it in the offering basket.
OFFERING Obviously, God doesn't need our money, but there are works that we believe God calls us to that require financial resources to accomplish. Our gifts assist in paying for church needs, as well as assisting those in crisis, both within our area and around the world. Giving isn't a burden for us; it is joyful to know that our church is committed to blessing others as God has blessed us. If you were visiting in our homes, we would not expect you to feel any obligation to pay for a meal or the rent. Likewise, we do not want you to feel obligated to participate in our offering. However, if you do wish to give, you can rest assured that your gift will be treated with respect and used to further the work of God's Kingdom.
COMMUNION We are God's children, and in the same way that an earthly parent would give anything to save their child, our Father God was willing to give anything to save us. Sin had entered the world, bringing death along with it, and the only way to triumph over this was to send His son, Jesus Christ, to pay the penalty of sin for all of us, which was death. God then resurrected Jesus, showing us that God had power over death, and He offers it to all who believe. The way we remember this gift to us is through our communion. This act helps us remember the sacrifice of Christ, and the gift of life he has given to us. Communion time will usually involve a short thought to help us focus, a prayer, and then people will pass plates with small pieces of bread on them. The bread reminds us of the body of Christ, which was broken for us. If you would like to participate in this reminder, take a piece of bread and eat it, then pass the tray along. Next there will be a tray with small cups of grape juice passed. This is a reminder of the blood of Jesus, which cleanses us from our sins. After drinking it, replace the cup in the tray and pass it along.
We hope this has given you an idea of what to expect should you come to visit us. Know that you are welcome, just as you are. We meet Sunday mornings at 9:30 a.m. and are currently located in the old Ferrelview Elementary school at 12220 NW Skyview Avenue in Kansas City.
We hope to see you soon!
